Cozy Saks For ALL Small Animals

When Dinky, my Dachshund, came to our home, I soon discovered his the insationable desire to bury in something. After getting tired of picking blankets up because he would root them off his bed, I decided to come up with a way he could get inside...the Cozy Sak was born. I tried several different materials, but the sturdiness, easy care, and variety has me always coming back to flannel and fleece. I have made many of these in two sizes, fitting the mini Dachshund and tweenie Dachshund.

Then, Spike the hedgehog came to live at our home. He also love to bury and hide himself in or under things. So I sized down the Cozy Sak to a xsmall 10" x 10" for little Spike to enjoy.

For Love Of The Hedgehog

A hedgehog is a spiney, insectavoiries mammal, not related to the porcupine. There are 16 species of hedgehogs found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand. They are not native to New Zealand but were introduced. There are no hedgehogs native to the United States. The domestic hedgehog can be kept as an exotic pet in all states but 7; Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, and Pennsylvania. The most common domesticated species is the African Pygmy Hedgehog. It is much smaller than the European hedgehog. Domestic hedgehogs come in a variety of color, and can have patterns such as pinto.

Hedgehogs should be kept in a well ventilated cage with a solid bottom. I prefer the cages that are for guinea pigs because they have a plastic bottom, not wire, and the bottoms are deep. Hedgehogs like to bury, so their pine chips needs to be thick. Never use cedar shavings as they can be toxic. If the cage has ramps, they need to be solid plastic too. They will get their feet caught in wire cages and accessories. The cage needs to be kept in a comfortable temperature of 65-80 degrees F. A good water bottle will provide water, and a small weighted (to help prevent dumping) bowl for feeding. One of the things I love about these little guys is that they can be litter trained. All you need is a small ferret litter box filled with non-clumping, unscented, dust-free cat litter. I feed my hedgehogs high protein, quality cat food and give meal worms for treats.

Handling can be a little tricky with hedgehogs, especially a grumpy one. They will roll into a ball with the intentions of not coming out, and pop, hiss trying to scare you off. When this happens, I just scoop them up into a Cozy Sak, and let them sit in my lap. This is a great way to bond, just letting them sit with me while I watch TV or read. They get use to my scent plus realize I'm not a threat, then they will unroll. My son's hedgehog, Spike, has always been easy to handle and tolerates just about anything. If fact he's so docile, we take him to the nursing home for visits. He's always willing to let others pet him. Now my hedgehog, Lucy, was a different story. I didn't think she was ever going to get use to us and let us play with her. But with much persistence, she has become a lap hedgehog, just sitting for hours enjoying our company.

I fell in love with hedgehogs about 10 years ago. We seen some for sale at a flea market in Alabama. I am particular about having knowledge of an animal before purchasing, so when I got home I did some researching. I'm thankful I did too because we lived in Georgia and they were and still are illegal there. About this time last year, I started looking for my son, Aaron, a birthday present. His bearded dragon had died recently and he is an animal lover like myself, so I started researching different pets. Aaron has a lot of allergies, so I had to be finicky about my choice. I knew he would be happy with any one I chose. I finally narrowed it down to a hedgehog or ferret. I had been around ferrets before and wasn't particular thrilled about their odor. The more I found out about hedgehogs, the more I knew what pet he would get. As his birthday approached, I started to panic because most breeders had waiting list. I finally found a breeder who had 1 male that was 8wks old, so we drove 4 hours (that's 1 way) to pick up our little spikey bundle. I fell in love with Spike and decided that I wanted one too. I called the breeder we got Spike from and he was going to have another litter ready in March, so I got on the waiting list. I ended up with a female, my little fat Lucy. Our relationship was  tough at first, but now she is my little lap buddy.

I would now like to introduce you to my two new babies. Yes, I said 2. I couldn't choose, so I got both. These sisters were born September 1st.

This little cutie is Angel. She is an albino with pink eyes. She is a little moody. I will have to be persistent with her and spend lots of quality TV time.

This one I named Annabelle. I got the name from a children's book about a hedgehog. She is a little sweetie, but you doesn't do mornings.

My Precious Pet Series: Spike the Hedgehog

As you know I love my animals and they are a lot of inspiration behind my crafts. So, I am going to do a series called "My Precious Pets", each telling the story of each pet. I hope you come to love these guys as much as I do...

I was first introduce to hedgehogs many years ago. We use to do a petting zoo for special events, and so I was always looking for an animal to make it a little more interesting. I found a hedgehog at an Alabama exotic animal auction and fell in love. I was excited to get home and research the little animal, but my research stopped short because I live in Georga and they were illegal. Glad I didn't purchase one before I researched them.

Last fall I was trying to find something for my sons 11th birthday that was approaching in January. He, like me, is a lover of all things animal and has always been super gentle with all animals. He's had a wonderful (surprisingly friendly) dwarf hamster that he named Hotdog (he was 3). He use to put Hotdog in his shirt and laugh hysterically. He had an adorable grey Dwarf bunny named Bugs and a Siamese cat named Sophie, whom we had to find new homes for because of my son's severe allergies. This nearly broke his heart. His next pet was a Bearded Dragon that he name Colonel. This was a wonderful pet for him that he had many years. Colonel died last summer, we're not sure why. So this lead me to my search for easy-to-care for pet that is easy on the allergies.

In my search for small animals, I came across the hedgehog again. Of course my interest was peaked. I read everything I could find on the Internet, then my search began for our little pet. This was difficult because by this time, Aaron's birthday was in a few weeks and all the breeders I found had waiting list. I found an ad on Hoobly.com for some hedgehogs that were 8wks old in Alabama (4 hours away from us now). I contacted the breeder with many questions and to my satisfaction, he had 2 males to choose from. So off we went.

Both hedgie were friendly, didn't ball up or pop. A little hissing though, but we weren't deterred. One was an albino and the other was grey pinto. I'm probably not using the right color name because they're so many and I can't tell difference in many of them. Aaron chose the grey pinto. We put him in his travel carrier and set out for home.

Aaron named him Spike (yes, he chooses his pets names hisself). We went through the normal adjustment period in which Spike would ball up, pop, and his at us, but he has mellowed more than I ever thought possible. I made a small animal Cozy Sak for Spike because he likes to bury and it made him easy to handle till he got use to us. Spike has mellowed so much, we use him as a therapy hedgehog. He travels with twice a month to the nursing and assisted living homes. The residents are excited to see him because he's so different. They like hearing about how to take care of him and watch him run around in his ball. Although we don't let anyone else hold him, they do pet him and he's just loves it.

Aaron plays with Spike all the time. I love to see him watching TV and telling Spike about what's going on, just like a friend was sitting there with him. Spike is a wonderful addition to our family.  I thank God for bringing him into our lives and that we are not the only one's being blessed by this adorable, loving, therapy Hedgehog named Spike.
