In His Word Wednesday: Job 1:21-22

Job 1:21-22
Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.
And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."
In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

I usually like to use just one verse at a time, but this morning all these three verses are important in this discussion.

I want to start off asking you how strong is your faith? For most of us, our faith is strong when things are going good, but when a little (or a lot) of turbulence starts to make waves, we falter in our faith.

Job's story is well known to most of us. He was a "man that was blameless, and upright, and one who feared the Lord and shunned evil." Even still, he lost his wealth, his children, and eventually his health. His wife told him to "curse God and die," and his friends were critical and judgmental. But through all this, all Job did was recognized God's sovereignty and worshiped him.

Job does eventually question God. God responds only with many examples of His sovereignty. God never answers Job's question of "why". A very humble Job response can be found in 42:2-6, where he excepts God's sovereignty over his life and trust God in all things.

Knowing God is sovereign in all aspects of his life, Job understood that God allows pain in our lives, but He may never reveal the reason for our suffering to us.

So again I ask, how strong is your faith? Will you trust Him even when you don't understand the "why" in your suffering?

  1. Very good point in reminding us that God doesn't usually tell us why. We just need to trust.

  2. Job is a wonderful example of complete faith in the character of God. And I think God honors our questions (even though He may not answer them to our satisfaction) when He knows we have complete faith in Him. This post reminds me of another verse in the Bible where Jesus says: "However when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:8b We need to keep coming to Him in every circumstance, even in our own failures.

  6. Thank you for all your wonderful comments. Luella I don't think God wants us to stop coming to Him or even questioning Him, my point is we have to learn not to get so upset when we don't understand. Blessings to you all.

  8. His ways are higher than our ways as the heavens are above the earth.

We don't have all the answers but He does.

  9. wonderful post!!!! And definitely something I have been learning this past year. When you go through trials in your life you can choose to wallow in your self pity of trust that God will get you through to the next step. It's a hard lesson to learn but in the long run it can be one of the best lessons:)
