In His Word Wednesday: Matthew 5:40

Matthew 5:40
If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.

I was at one time a collector of Russian glass animal figurines. I love colorful glass and have spent years purchasing choice pieces with striking colors; keeping them in a curio cabinet with a light, that shows off their beauty. Recently, I decided that I would like to get rid of the curio and put a nice fish aquarium there, so I have been listing all my little treasures on Ebay. I have sold several already, packaging each carefully in bubble wrap, securing them in the center of the box for protection. Last week I receive a message stating that their item had been partially broken, and they didn't want to return the item for a refund (I offer refund only when item has been received back); but wanted a partial refund. This frustrated me, as I know how well I had packaged the item, and they didn't want insurance on their package. Several friends told me to tell the buyer, I couldn't offer a refund as my policy stated they had to return the item. Part of me felt like doing this, as I didn't feel they were being honest with me. On the other hand, Matthew 5:40 kept coming up in my head. I will never know if she/he was being honest, but I do know Jesus tells us how to handle these kind of situations. I gave the person a refund without product return. I have been told by others, that I was stupid and don't know how to do business. As a Christian, even when we feel deceived, cheated, or used, we must choose to follow Jesus. The above verse tells me I need to go above and beyond, making the customer happy. Even though I lost my product and money, I have a peace inside that only Jesus gives, and a happy customer. To me that's worth more than any money in my pocket.

  6. wow, I have to think about this now! I have a similar situation where the buyer said they never received the item but they left positive feedback on it! He said that was a mistake. Now I have been torn over whether or not to refund the money....thank you for giving me a new insight on this!

  8. Matthew is correct as we all know. I have had so many treasures actually stolen from me over the years but am so blessed by what I still have.

  9. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this situation. I think that if you followed your heart and did what you thought was right, then you made the right decision. It's good business to be kind.
